By registering for, and participating in experiments at the XS/FS Lab, you acknowledge and agree to the provisions of this document.

Throughout this document, "experiments at the XS/FS Lab" mean both face-to-face and online experiments.

In order to become a human subject participating in experiments at the XS/FS lab, you should register in the lab's Participation Database. Only current FSU students with a valid FSU ID are allowed to register.

We use the data collected in the Participation Database for the following purposes:
  • to inform subjects about new experiments and invite them for participation
  • to conduct a scientifically motivated selection of subjects for specific experiments
  • to keep track of subjects' participation in experiments
Any subject may at any time choose not to receive further invitations to experiments.

At the request of a subject the collected personal data will be completely deleted. Upon such a request, the subject’s first name, last name, and FSU ID (or the associated e-mail address) will remain in the database for a period of four years to exclude multiple registrations; after that they will be deleted as well.

For registration in the Participation Database, providing the following information is mandatory:
  • First name and last name
  • FSU e-mail address ending with @fsu.edu
The following information is optional but helps experimenters contact subjects if needed (for example, to remind them about an upcoming session or inform about a cancellation), and helps subjects get invited to experiments based on specific characteristics:
  • Phone number
  • Field of study/profession
  • Gender
The data in the Participation Database will not be disclosed to third parties, with the exception of the experimenters and affiliates of the XS/FS Lab, unless such disclosure is required by law. FSU students registering in the Participation Database provide their data voluntarily and are aware of the natural risks associated with storing personal data on a server connected to the Internet. The data are stored on a secure server; however, despite best efforts to keep the data secure there is no 100% guarantee that the data will not be hacked, stolen or otherwise disclosed to a potentially unrestricted set of people. In the unlikely event such a breach of security happens, any person registered in the Participation Database will not hold FSU or any of its affiliates liable for any losses resulting from the security breach, and will not be entitled to any actions, beyond securing the database, to mitigate the consequences of the security breach.

It is understood that the mandatory data collected in the Participation Database are considered “directory information” under FERPA. It is also understood that the sole purpose of the Participation Database is to facilitate scientific experiments conducted in the US with US persons either face-to-face or online. As such, the use of the database is not within the scope of GDPR.
